Rangers co-owner Jed York has opened up on his Ibrox experience in a rare interview following the summer takeover of the Glasgow giants.
The San Francisco 49ers CEO and principal owner has allowed Paraag Marathe to take centre stage and represent the NFL giants following the American takeover in the summer alongside Andrew Cavenagh. It has been a rollercoaster campaign for the Glasgow giants in the new era.
The ill-fated appointment of Russell Martin combined with a disastrous summer recruitment drive led by sporting director Kevin Thelwell results in a massive shake up. But since Martin, Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart were shown the door the club’s fortunes have turned around.
Danny Rohl has led Rangers back into the title race with Rangers sitting just two points off the Scottish Premiership summit. York has now lifted the lid on his “special experience” with the Light Blues having taken in a clash with Celtic this term.
And York admits he has enjoyed seeing Rangers attempt to “get back” to glory this term. Speaking to talkSPORT about the overseas investment from the 49ers. York said: “We own Leeds United, and we are big investors in Rangers.
“I get over to the UK a lot for games. There is nothing like Elland Road or going to see a Rangers match. I was at my first Old Firm match earlier this season for a draw, and it was truly a special experience. Watching Rangers get back up, trying to fight, compete, and hold their own has been special. We are hoping for a lot more success.”
The 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium is set to host a series of World Cup games, fresh from staging the Super Bowl showdown between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks earlier this month.
York added: “To be able to host the Super Bowl and the World Cup in the same year is a phenomenal feat and something that I do not think will ever be done again. Having the best athletic competitions here is going to be great. I cannot wait for the World Cup. It is going to be a blast. Get out to the Bay Area this summer; it is going to be great.”
