January is a month when many motorists find themselves dealing with condensation in their cars, often seeking quick solutions to eliminate it. If you’re frequently faced with fogged-up windows and are unsure how to tackle it, there’s a straightforward method that could prevent it from occurring altogether.
The Royal Automobile Club (RAC) suggests that applying a simple item to your car windscreen can help, and the solution might surprise you. This hack, if executed correctly, can prevent condensation, making it expert advice worth heeding during the winter months.
Drivers have previously shared this trick online. On Reddit, one user revealed how an unexpected household item can help prevent foggy windows.
A social media user shared: “Shaving foam for car windows. I don’t know if this already has been posted, but I only recently came across this life hack.
“So, here in the Netherlands, the fines for fogged windows are pretty high. And, if you drive an older car like me, you probably suffer from fogged up windows [at] this time of year.
“Use shaving foam to stop this! Just put some on your window and spread it with a clean cloth, piece of sponge or whatever! Wipe it completely off, and it should work fine!”
The post prompted swift responses, with one person commenting: “I’ve used it on my bathroom mirror for almost 10 years. Never did I think to use it on my car windshield.”
Another chimed in: “You, my good sir, have made my life a little easier. Thank you and enjoy my little bitty upvote, as I bet you will get plenty more.”
A third person responded: “Oh wow, thank you for that. Have tried everything else.” Meanwhile, a fourth individual wrote: “Those who race motorcycles have used it forever. It keeps your goggles from fogging over.”
As it happens, the method is effective, and the RAC confirms you can use the product to achieve the desired result. You simply need to adhere to a few guidelines when applying it.
The crucial thing is to make sure it doesn’t obstruct your view of the road, and to use the appropriate amount. It could potentially save you considerable time during your morning routine.
What does the RAC say?
The website states: “Take a clean towel and place a dollop of shaving foam onto it. Wipe the windscreen with the towel, spreading the shaving foam over the entire surface.
“Then take another clean towel and wipe off the shaving foam completely. This protective barrier should help stop your windscreen from misting up, but it will need to be regularly reapplied to continue to work.
“Another useful item to help demist your car is a demister pad. These can be purchased over at the RAC Shop.”
To ensure you apply it correctly, you’ll need to spread the cream thinly and evenly. You can rub it across the interior surface of the windscreen, mirrors or windows.
Afterwards, use a clean, dry cloth to remove the foam. You must polish the glass until it’s entirely clear and streak-free, as nothing should obstruct your visibility.
