Kym Vincenti started learning to play the guitar during lockdown. As she was practicing chords, lyrics were popping into her head and so, she started to write songs. Her first was a story about lockdown and how fast the virus was spreading, just like gossip and, just like gossip, it was doing a lot of damage.
She started charting her progress on social media and caught the ear of Dutch Van Spall, music producer at BHM. It wasn’t the first time their paths had crossed as in 2020, Dutch had been hosting Radio Rugby and Kym was teaching yoga regularly on his show.
‘We always got a lot of calls about her voice when she was teaching yoga and the callers would say they could listen to Kym all day. When I heard her singing on social media, I realized that hypnotic soothing effect came across in her songs and I knew I had to get her into the studio!’ Dutch said.
Kym turns sixty on 29th August and her first single, Not on Lockdown, will be released on 5th August 2022. She says she never expected to become a recording artist at her age but it’s proof that it’s never too late to do the things we love.
‘When I was younger, I never had the confidence to get up and sing,’ she said, ‘not because I couldn’t but for fear of ridicule. As a bullied kid that was always what I expected and I let it affect me way too much. But, with the passing of years we realize that none of that mattered. So, I’m late to the party but now I’m here I’m going to make the most of it.’
