Russell is set for a return to Tannadice in a major boost to Jim Goodwin’s attacking options
Johnny Russell has arrived at Dundee United to seal his return.
The former Scotland international is at their St Andrews training base this morning for his medical.
If all goes well the 35-year-old will sign an initial deal with United for the rest of the season.
Russell took in United’s weekend defeat at Motherwell.
Russell came through the ranks at youth ranks at Tannadice and was six years in the first team there before he moved to Derby County in 2013 for a deal of around £750,000.
The forward, who has 14 Scotland caps, had five years with the Rams before he moved to American in 2018.
He has been in Major League Soccer since.
He was at Sporting Kansas City before he made the switch to Real Salt Lake last year.
Russell is now set to return home to get back and get more playing time.
United have cash to spend after they sold Nikolaj Moller to Norwegian side Sandefjord for £700,000.
It gives Jim Goodwin another attacking option to go along with Max Watters and Zac Sapsford.
They also have young Owen Stirton who is also part of a cooperation agreement with Airdrie.
The signing of Russell is also likely to go down well with the United fans.
It has been a difficult season for United as they look set to miss out on the top six.
They are still in the Scottish Cup and had a quarter-final clash with Falkirk on Friday night.
Before that they have their re-arranged fixture Premiership with St Mirren on Tuesday evening.
