Drivers risk being slapped with £1,000 fine for ‘harmless’ headlight use

Many drivers make the error

Drivers could face a £1,000 penalty for committing a very common error while out on the roads. The “harmless” action is carried out by numerous motorists but is, in fact, a breach of the Highway Code.

Most motorists take pride in showing courtesy to fellow road users by saying “thank you” when they’ve been let out, given right of way, or when someone has shown patience. However, using your headlights could land you with a hefty fine.

Avoid headlight flashing

Motoring specialists have shared that this gesture goes against the Highway Code. Kwik Fit said: “When driving in low-visibility conditions (such as fog or at night), some drivers choose to flash their headlights as a “thank you”.

“While this seems harmless, flashing headlights can be a distraction, confusing other drivers and doing more harm than good.

“Because of this, the Highway Code stipulates that you should only use your headlights ‘to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users’.”

How can you get a fine?

Certain motorists use their headlights to warn others of speed cameras, police activity or other potential hazards ahead. Misusing headlights in this manner can be regarded as obstructing the police.

Driving school company Drive Johnson’s stated: “Flashing your headlights can be used to signal to other drivers that there is a speed camera or police ahead. Many drivers are unaware that this helpful gesture can see you facing a fine yourself.

“Motorists can receive fines of up to £1000 for flashing their headlights to warn other drivers.”

Car dealership Dick Lovett explained: “If drivers are caught doing this, drivers could face fines of up to £1,000, as legally, this would classify as ‘obstructing police duties’ under section 89 of the Police Act 1997.

“And while it might feel nice to help and look out for a fellow driver, it could lead to more reckless drivers on the road if they’re not caught by police and fined accordingly.

“Remember, speed limits are there to keep everyone, including you, safe.”

When can you flash your headlights?

According to the Highway Code, use your headlights to alert fellow road users to your presence.

Only flash your headlights to inform other motorists that you are there if you find yourself in a hazardous situation or if they might not have seen you.
