The GB News presenter is in hospital after suffering a stroke last week, with his son saying the family is taking things ‘one step at a time’
Eamonn Holmes’ son has revealed that his father is “doing OK” following a stroke. “We’re taking it one step at a time,” Declan Holmes said, adding that his family was focused on “keeping things steady around” the 66-year-old GB News presenter.
The news channel released a statement on Saturday, confirming that Holmes had been taken to hospital after suffering a stroke, having fallen ill the previous week. It stated he was “responding well to treatment”.
Holmes, a seasoned broadcaster, joined GB News in 2022 to host its breakfast programme, having previously presented shows on Sky News and ITV.
In his statement, shared on Instagram, Declan said the news had come “as a real shock” and expressed his gratitude to well-wishers for their messages of support. Stay in the know by making sure you’re receiving our daily newsletter
“We’d really value a bit of privacy as we navigate it [sic], and what lies ahead, but thank you again for for the support as it means so much to dad and the rest of the family,” he said.
The post was accompanied by a photograph of him with his arm around his father’s shoulder.
On Saturday, the channel’s chief executive Angelos Frangopoulos described Holmes as a “loved member of the GB News family” and said “we’re with him every step of the way as he recovers”.
Holmes, who hails from Northern Ireland, has previously spoken candidly about a number of health challenges, including spinal surgery, a double hip replacement, and difficulties with walking and his reliance on a mobility scooter.
A familiar face on breakfast television, Holmes has undertaken numerous broadcasting roles throughout a career spanning several decades.
Prior to joining GB News, he was a key member of ITV’s This Morning presenting team, frequently appearing alongside Ruth Langsford, whom he wed in 2010.
The couple announced their separation in 2024, with a spokesperson confirming “their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing”.
According to NHS guidance, a stroke occurs when blood ceases to flow to a portion of the brain. Potential symptoms include facial weakness, where one side of the face may droop, as well as arm weakness and difficulties with speech.
