A doctor has revealed his “five pillars of health” that could extend your life expectancy. The medical professional claims these lifestyle modifications don’t demand significant financial investment or excessive time commitment.
In a video excerpt from his podcast No Appointment Necessary posted to Instagram, Doctor Amir Khan offered guidance on achieving a longer, healthier life. Dr Amir, widely recognised from his ITV appearances, outlined his recommendations for maintaining better health.
His co-presenter Cherry Healey enquired: “What can we actually do to increase our lifespan in a healthy way?” Dr Amir initially acknowledged that many wellness podcasts cater exclusively to a particular audience.
These individuals “have all the time and all the money and all the space and all the freedom in the world to do all these things”, he explained. “And that’s not true for everyone, right?”
He then encouraged people to follow these steps:
- Stop smoking, reduce alcohol consumption and maintain a nutritious diet
- Increase physical activity
- Ensure quality sleep
- Manage stress levels
- Maintain social connections
Dr Amir emphasised that smoking represents the most harmful habit we can adopt. “It hardens your arteries so your blood pressure goes up,” he explained.
“We know no level of alcohol is safe, but if you are going to drink alcohol, try and drink it within those limits that are recommended. And then it goes to those things that people refer to as lifestyle choices.
“It’s the food you eat. It’s how much you move your good quality sleep, your stress management, and positive social connection.
“So I call them my five pillars to good health.” In the video’s caption, it stated: “You don’t need perfection, money, or a wellness retreat to improve your health.
“Quit smoking, drink less, move more, sleep better, manage stress, and stay connected to people. The basics still matter most.”
