Hundreds od schools have announced full or partial closures on Wednesday as temperatures rocket

06:03, 24 Jun 2026Updated 11:41, 24 Jun 2026

A huge number of schools in Wales are closed on Wednesday and others will introduce safety measures to ensure the wellbeing of children as a Met Office red weather warning hits the country.

Hundreds of schools have announced full closures with temperatures set to reach highs of 39C. Others will offer cold school lunches, will shorten break times, loosen school uniform rules and adapt lessons.

Other schools have decided to partially shut at 1pm when the temperatures peak.

The decision to close some schools comes after the Welsh Government wrote to every council in Wales to spell out what they should do during the red heat wave. Each authority can put their own measures in place, but there is overarching guidance of what schools should do to ensure they can stay open and safe for pupils.

These are the schools shut in every part of Wales and the measures being taken by each council:

Bridgend County Borough Council

Bridgend council said all nine secondary schools in Bridgend will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday due to the Met Office red warning.

St Martins Comprehensive will not reopen until Monday.

A Caerphilly council spokesperson said: “The Met Office has issued amber and red weather warnings for extreme heat affecting Wales from today through to Friday.

“The council is not advising schools to close because of the forecast high temperatures. Our headteachers are best placed to assess the individual circumstances at their school and make decisions based on local conditions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff.

“Schools are expected, through their risk assessment processes, to take reasonable and proportionate steps to minimise the risks associated with high temperatures and sun exposure. Practical guidance on measures to reduce these risks, including hydration, access to shade, sun protection and adjustments to outdoor activities, is available through Schools Hub and Welsh Government guidance.”

“The wellbeing of school staff is also an important consideration during periods of extreme heat. Schools should consider the impact of high temperatures on all employees and, where practicable, make appropriate adjustments to working arrangements to minimise heat-related risks.

“We would encourage all schools to monitor the latest weather forecasts and follow the relevant guidance to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils, staff and visitors during this period of exceptionally hot weather.”
