The UK could potentially see its first named storm of the season, forecasters have warned
Met Office weather maps show Wales being hit by repeated walls of rain this week as forecasters warn the UK could see its first named storm of the autumn. A deep area of low pressure will cross the UK later this week, with turbulent conditions expected.
The week will start off largely dry for most in Wales on Monday before the first heavy band of rain moves in overnight into Tuesday. Much of the country will wake up to heavy downpours in the morning before the rain clears to make way for sunny spells for the rest of the day.
The weather then takes another turn for the worse as more bands of rain move across the UK, with the BBC forecast warning that the first named storm of the season could be on its way. If the storm is named, it will be called Storm Austen.
The BBC say: “Weather models suggest there is the potential for the jet stream to guide a deep area of low pressure across the UK by Friday. In addition to heavy rain, gales or even severe gales will be wrapped around the deep low.
“At the moment most computer models take the centre of the low pressure system across the south of the UK. The highest risk of disruptive winds would be over southernmost parts of England and Wales and possibly some eastern coastal counties of England later on Friday. Such a track would leave Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland with quieter weather conditions.
“However, some computer models show the deep low taking a more northerly track. If this happens, then gales and disruption could be expected more widely with impacts also in Scotland and Northern Ireland.”
It comes as the Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for south and mid Wales on Friday, with the weather agency warning that gusts of up to 70mph are possible in exposed areas.
Due to the uncertainty of the track of the potential storm, there is potential for the forecast to change and it is important to keep across any potential Met Office weather warnings.
