Cadbury has warned customers of an Easter chocolate scam that has been targeting people through WhatsApp in recent days.
The scam sees unsuspecting victims receive a message that promises a free ‘Easter Chocolate Basket’ from the firm, alongside a link to an unknown website.
Messages are sent from someone posing as a friend or family member from their contact list.
But people have been urged not to click the link, enter any personal details or forward the message on to other customers.
The scam has been circulated by many people on social media in a bid to alert unsuspecting victims.
One person wrote: “Had this sent to me from loads of family members on WhatsApp this morning.
“Spreading like wildfire with a shortened Russian URL.
“Probably worth telling your folks not to click it.”
Cadbury said that it was working to ‘resolve’ the issue as it issued a warning to customers on Facebook earlier today.
A spokesperson said: “We’ve been made aware of circulating posts on social media, claiming to offer consumers a free Easter Chocolate Basket.
“We can confirm that this has not been generated by us and would urge consumers not to interact or share personal information through the post.
“Customer security is our priority and we’re working with relevant organisations to ensure this is resolved.”
