It is no secret that Scotland offers plenty of options when it comes to a staycation, from bustling city breaks to relaxing rural retreats. However, the Daily Record’s latest Airbnb of the Week is for those that are looking for a true romantic escape from modern living this summer.
Tigh Mairi is a remote property situated on a hillside above Loch Inchlaggan, near the scattered settlement of Inchlaggan in the Scottish Highlands. A five-night stay at the secluded cabin, which sleeps up to two people, can be booked for around £670 through Airbnb.
Described as an “ideal hideaway for couples or friends” in the Airbnb listing, Tigh Mair is accessed via 4.5 kilometres of forest track from the nearest public road. The property has access to a network of paths and forest tracks, which offer opportunities for walking and biking.

The cabin itself has been renovated in the style of an alpine chalet, based on the original walls of an ancient black-house dating back to the 18th century. The property is fully equipped with a modern kitchen and bathroom, while it is light and bright thanks to large windows that let natural light pour in.
According to the Airbnb listing, Tigh Mairi is powered by its own hydro plant and retains its “rustic charm” with exposed stone walls, timber beams, and a stone-flag floor. The property is also dog-friendly, meaning visitors can bring their furry friends along with them for their holiday.
Outside, guests have free access to the croft of Garry Gualach and its loch and river frontage. The working croft is home to various farm animals, including Highland cattle, while guests are also welcome to fish in the loch and to rent a Canadian canoe or a rowing boat.
On Airbnb, Tigh Mairi has earned very positive feedback from past guests—with a near-perfect average rating of 4.92 out of five based on 76 reviews. The property is also classed as a ‘guest favourite’ on the website, which means that it is in the top 10 per cent of eligible listings based on ratings and reviews.
One previous guest shared: “Our second time staying here and won’t be the last, adore this cabin, feels like home away from home. Simon is a fantastic host, very friendly and helpful. The cabin withstood the storm just fine, no issues with Wi-Fi or electricity. A perfect little slice of heaven, that we totally adore. Thank you for yet another amazing week!”
A slightly less positive review reads: “Great location in Highlands, ideal for hikers or exploring Highlands. Electricity was sparse, in large part due to heat drying river that supplies power, but an alternate power source would be great as left us stuck a couple of days in evening, particularly when cooking as the oven would essentially shut down the power.
“The midges and ticks from the front garden were a big problem, particularly with our dogs, would be ideal with a small fire and trimmed garden out front to reduce this and perhaps allow time outside at night.”
Another happy visitor posted: “Great place surrounded by nature and a great host. It makes you experience nature in a way you wouldn’t in a normal stay! Definitely a unique, intense and beautiful experience. The cabin was very nice, cozy, clean and even luxurious. Water from the river and power from the mini-hydro added to the nature experience.”
Elsewhere, another remote staycation destination in Scotland is Garvault House near the Highlands village of Kinbrace. An overnight stay for two at the hotel, which offers rooms with private bathrooms and lake or mountain views, is available to book for as little as £210 through Booking.com.
Garvault House currently holds an overall rating of 9.0 out of 10 on Booking.com, based on 250 visitor reviews. One recent guest described the hotel as having an “incredible location and views”, though they also stated that they were “a little disappointed by the food”.
