Thousands of people will be travelling on Friday as Wales is set to be hit by a heatwave over the bank holiday weekend
Those looking to get away for the bank holiday weekend and make the most of the warm weather are facing delays and transport disruption. The roads are starting to get busier and there are already some delays at the usual traffic hotspots on the M4.
The AA has estimated 23.4 million car journeys will take place on Friday. It highlighted that the M4 from London towards Wales will be a likely traffic blackspot.
A crash is already causing disruption on the M4. The two-vehicle collision has taken place on the westbound carriageway at Junction 44 for Lon Las.
As well as congestion on the roads, significant train delays are expected in Wales this weekend.
Transport for Wales is encouraging passengers to plan ahead as essential rail improvements take place across the Cardiff and valleys network.
Planned infrastructure improvements will close all lines through Cardiff Queen Street between Sunday, May 24 and bank holiday Monday, May 25.
To keep passengers moving, a combination of rail replacement buses and service diversions will operate across the local Cardiff and Valleys network.
Elsewhere, Network Rail has confirmed it is set to undertake work on the Severn Tunnel that the company says will “make the route more reliable for years to come”. The railway between Newport and Bristol Parkway or Filton Abbey Wood will be closed from Saturday.

Traffic Wales has reported a crash on the M4 westbound at junction 44. Traffic officers are on their way.
Llywelyn Road in Cwmbran is currently closed in both directions due to a broken down vehicle. Police are urging drivers to avoid the area where possible.
Transport for Wales has warned that due to emergency services dealing with an incident between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth services may be delayed or cancelled by up to 60 minutes.
Disruption is expected to last until 4.30pm.
A points failure is also impacting trains between Coryton and Heath Low Level. Trains will be cancelled in both directions and disruption is expected until 4pm.
There are currently delays in a number of areas on the M4. Here are the latest updates from traffic monitoring service Inrix:
- Delays on M4 Westbound between J38 A48 (Margam Off Slip) and J41 A48 / B4286 (Baglan). Travel time is 15 minutes.
- Heavy traffic on M4 into the Brynglas Tunnel Eastbound before J26 A4051 (Malpas Road).
- M4 Westbound busy but moving at J43 A465 (Llandarcy).
- Heavy traffic on M4 Brynglas Tunnels Westbound before J26 A4051 (Malpas Road).
Many people will be looking to get away to make the most of the warm weather forecast this weekend. Wales looks set to experience a heatwave, with temperatures of 30C expected early next week.
Drivers are facing possible disruption on the M4 westbound near Bridgend following an earlier collision on the exit slip road at junction 35 (Pencoed). Delays have now eased, but recovery is ongoing.
A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said:
“Officers were called just before 12pm today (May 22) to the slip road of Junction 35 (Pencoed) M4 Westbound to reports of a collision involving two cars. Recovery is ongoing and there were no reported injuries.”
