The Northern Lights are a truly breathtaking sight, and if you’re lucky, you might even be able to spot them in the UK
Many people harbour dreams of witnessing the Northern Lights. The stunning green and purple ripples of light are a genuinely breathtaking spectacle, with enthusiasts travelling vast distances for just a fleeting view.
However, if you’re among those yearning to experience this natural wonder, there’s no need to venture to remote corners of the globe. Surprisingly, with the right knowledge, you can spot them here in the UK.
Helen Rolph, travel insurance expert at Quotezone.co.uk said: “Many people are beginning to seek more time in nature, away from screens. Even at night, travellers can enjoy the beauty of the UK, with Aurora Borealis sightings possible across northern parts of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
“When geomagnetic activity is high, and the skies are clear, the Northern Lights can create stunning displays. Even when the aurora is not visible, the UK’s dark skies still offer magnificent views of stars and planets — plus the chance to relax and unwind, ideal for a peaceful camping trip or staycation.
“High altitudes, away from light pollution, often offer the best chance of seeing celestial events and have become a trendy option for those seeking a New Year’s mini-break with a difference.”
Throughout the UK, there are 10 spots where fortune may grant you a sighting of the aurora. Your best bet lies within Dark Sky Reserves, areas free from urban illumination where the heavens can be fully appreciated, reports the Express.
The UK is home to seven of these reserves, with four providing opportunities to witness the lights.
