What you need to know about Tweedbank; the charming town named one of Scotland’s newest towns
- Scotland is now home to many new towns, as settlements across the country increase in size. Scotland has 33 more towns than it did just over a decade ago according to a new report from Scotland’s Towns Partnership.
- Among the newest towns in Scotland is Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders. The town is located southeast of Galashiels, around 35 miles from Edinburgh.
- Tweedbank dates back to the 1970s, when it was intended to help regenerate the Borders region. Today, it is home to more than 2,000 people.
- The town features a number of shops, including convenience stores and specialist shops such as Just Cycle. Meanwhile, beer lovers can head to brewery Tempest Brewing Co—previously named one of the top 100 breweries in the world.
- The most notable attraction in Tweedbank is Abbotsford, which was the home of Scottish novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott. The Abbotsford Estate is free and open to all, featuring a range of picturesque trails, while visitors can also head inside the 1800s baronial mansion and explore rooms that have been left just as Scott kept them.
- Abbotsford also features the Ochiltree’s café, which is one of the most popular food and drink destinations in the area. Customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional Scottish dishes made with locally sourced ingredients— including those from Abbotsford’s own kitchen garden.
- Tweedbank is home to Tweedbank Station, which is one of the stops on the Borders Railway train line. The station is also the line’s final stop in the Scottish Borders.
