Nicola Sturgeon is set to take to the stage in her comedy debut just days after she was told she would face no charges as a result of Operation Branchform.
The former first minister will host a show titled Books and Banter at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow alongside best friend and crime author Val McDermid tonight. The Glasgow Comedy Festival event will fill the 1,785-seat theatre, with fewer than 150 gallery tickets left available.
It comes just two days after Sturgeon’s name was cleared in the police investigation into the SNP’s finances.
The duo are expected to share an evening of “chat and laughs” and discuss why reading matters. They will also reveal the books they love, loath, and have laughed and argued over.
They’ll be joined on stage by comedy guests to talk about the books that have left their mark on them.
The event description reads: “Lively chat and lots of laughs guaranteed on what promises to be a brilliant – and revelatory – evening.”
On Thursday, after the criminal investigation into Sturgeon was dropped, she said she’d been “vindicated” and that there was “never a scrap of evidence” against her.
It came after her estranged husband and former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell appeared in court charged with embezzlement of party funds.
Meanwhile, Sturgeon last week announced she would not seek re-election to the Scottish Parliament in 2026.
The 54-year-old said that “in her heart”, she knew that the “time was right to open a new chapter” in her life.
And it was also announced this week that her political memoir, Frankly, will be published in August. The promotional interviews ahead of the book hitting the shelves are almost guaranteed to make headlines.
With her memoir likely to top the bestseller list later in the year, we can expect more stage shows and high-profile media appearances for months to come.
Books and Banter at the Glasgow Comedy Festival is scheduled for 5pm on Saturday night. Limited gallery seats remain.
