The overall pass rate at grades A* to E for A-levels in Swansea was 98%
A-level results for Swansea schools have exceeded the national average for Wales. The overall pass rate at grades A* to E in the city was 98% compared with the Welsh average of 97.5%.
In total 32.8% of results were the top A*-A grades, which was well above the 29.5% average for Wales, and 81.8% of grades were C or better. Across Wales results were up for the very top A* grade.
Among success stories are Carl Offia, 18 from Bishop Vaughan Catholic School who got an A* and two As. He is going to Cardiff to study medicine. This is how grades and grade boundaries are decided for A-level results.
“I feel like I’ve always wanted to help people around me,” Carl said. “I think with medicine I can go in every day and I’m going to be able to help someone else in their lives.” Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here.

Joel George Destin, 18, is celebrating with three A*s in maths, further mathematics, and physics. He is now heading to Bristol University for a four years master’s course in mechanical engineering.
He said: “I felt a bit complacent, and chilled over the years, but after last year I just felt like I could put in much higher than this, which is why I really wanted the three A*s.”
Cardiff also posted higher than Wales average A-level results as thousands of students collected their grades.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said: “All our A-level students deserves huge congratulations for their achievements this year and I wish them the very best for their futures and hope they will look back fondly on their time at our excellent schools in Swansea.
“Of course their achievements would not have been possible without the hard work and support of our schools and our teachers, as well as students’ families, so I’d like to thank all who contributed to today’s success.”
