Record Sport’s Tam McManus and a host of football fans reacted to the interview from the Ibrox midfielder
Lyall Cameron has been slammed for ‘disrespect’ over his comments regarding old club Dundee after his move to Rangers.
Russell Martin pitched him in from the start in the thumping of Viktoria Plzen last night as he rang the changes following his weekend blast at his players for dropping points at Motherwell.
The midfielder – alongside team-mate – Cyriel Dessers – were namechecked for praise and both started the 3-0 Champions League third qualifying round win with James Tavernier and Nico Raskin two of the four bodies to drop out of the XI.
BBC Sport Scotland shared an interview with Cameron where he compared his old and new surroundings. He insisted it was like a different world while also making reference to him being ‘a full-time football player’ – a comment that hasn’t gone down too well.
Record Sport columnist Tam McManus was quick to react to the footage, branding it ‘pretty disrespectful’.
He wrote on X: “Second time he has said something like this. Pretty disrespectful to Dundee FC and the coaches who gave him the opportunity and platform to go and play for a bigger club.”
Speaking to BBC Scotland, Cameron said: “To be honest it’s been a totally different world. The speed of play and intensity and everything is totally different.
“It’s almost like a different world for me, to be honest. A different job now that I am here. It is a full-time football player. Whereas it is a bit different in Dundee.
“So obviously it took a bit of getting used to and I had a few niggles here and there just because the intensity and demands are so high.
“Now that my body has got used to that, and I am kind of coping a bit better, I am really enjoying the challenge.”
Fans also took to social media to react to the clip.
One said: “Really poor comments here, very disrespectful to where he came from.”
Another posted: “He’s lost a lot of my respect there.”
A further punter added: “Please get him some media training. He is going to get himself into lots of trouble.”
On the park, boss Martin was full of praise for the 23-year-old after the opening day draw at Fir Park.
That was enough to convince him to put him in from the off and he didn’t disappoint his boss or fans.
He said: “Lyall was fantastic. His energy helped the team a lot and he did exactly what we asked him to do.
“He showed real moments of quality and his willingness to run for the team selflessly was immense.
“I’m really pleased with him because we’ve made a lot of signings and he’s probably gone under the radar a little bit.
“But he’s desperate to learn and do well. He has a lot of attributes and I’ve been really impressed with him. He’ll help us.”
