Best used car of the year announced – and it’s not a Ford or Kia

A motoring publication has suggested what it thinks is the best used car on sale in the UK, as the cost of living crisis worsens and drivers seek alternative options

15:21, 21 Oct 2026Updated 15:22, 21 Oct 2026

A prominent motoring magazine has revealed which vehicle it considers to be Britain’s finest used car as increasing numbers of motorists choose to avoid buying brand new. While acquiring a car with minimal mileage is appealing, it can prove to be an extremely costly undertaking.

Instead, the majority of buyers turn to the second-hand car market where they may discover a quality bargain.

With this in consideration, motoring expert Auto Express has compiled a list of what it believes are the finest used vehicles currently available, with their top choice being a car that could arrive at an ideal moment for those considering the transition from petrol and diesel to electric.

The vehicle in question is the Ioniq 5, an electric five-door hatchback from Korean manufacturer Hyundai. Initially launched in 2021, they can now be purchased for as little as £13,000.

Regarding their selection, which from the side looks a little like a Lancia Delta Integrale, Auto Express stated it was largely due to its range, styling, and potentially remaining warranties.

They explained: “The futuristic styling is a big draw, but that beauty is more than skin deep. The tech-filled cabin is packed with equipment, and the long wheelbase ensures there’s plenty of room for the entire family.

“All versions, even those with a single motor driving the rear wheels, handle well, and every model will comfortably do north of 200 miles on a charge….Many Ioniq 5s will have part of their original, five-year manufacturer warranty still intact, too.”

Another attraction of the Ioniq 5 is its electric powertrain. While electricity costs have increased in recent years, they haven’t climbed as steeply or as quickly as petrol or diesel prices.

Based on the RAC‘s data from 21 October, the average cost per litre of petrol stands at approximately 174.04p, while diesel is even steeper at 199.05p. In certain locations, diesel has exceeded the £2 threshold for the first time, prompting demands for governmental intervention.

Moreover, electric vehicles, both new and second-hand, have grown increasingly attractive.

In a statement following this costly milestone, Simon Williams, the RAC’s head of policy, cautioned that motorists would encounter difficulties heading into an exceptionally expensive period.

He said: “This is a pump price threshold that no-one wanted to cross – the average price of a litre of diesel has risen to a record 200.01p and is showing no signs of slowing, heaping more misery onto motorists.

“The cost of filling up an average family car is now £110, almost £32 more than it was at the start of the US/Iran war. This will be very challenging for households and companies that drive a lot of miles, from commuters, haulage and delivery firms, businesses with large fleets all the way through to sole traders.”
