UGM Students Create Blockchain-Based Foodscan
Quoted from the official UGM news published on Thursday (19/02/2026), the cross-disciplinary team from the campus won a silver medal in the event 2nd International Student Competition which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on 14–15 February 2026.
The competition, which was organized by CEM, Universiti Putra Malaysia, was attended by participants from eight countries. This event encourages the birth of research-based innovations that have a social impact and are sustainability-oriented.

In the competition, the UGM team presented a food technology innovation called Foodscan. This solution is designed to answer the challenges of food safety testing which currently still relies on destructive methods.

The team leader, Melati Putri Ramadhani, explained that conventional methods are time consuming and damage samples. Therefore, Foodscan was developed as a solution non-destructive which is more efficient.
By utilizing AI through Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), this application is able to detect the risk of chemicals and contaminants from photos of food products. This approach is considered fast, practical and relevant to support the national Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program.
Blockchain Integration for Transparent Food Data
Foodscan’s advantages don’t stop with AI. The system created by students from Indonesia also integrates distributed ledger so that all detection data is stored transparently and safely.
“There is real-time tracking of food safety history to ensure sustainable nutrition for children,” said Melati in her statement.
This means that each test result is recorded permanently and is not easily manipulated. This transparency is key, especially when talking about food security on a national scale.
Saskia Aulia Ramadhani added that this innovation is expected to prevent disease due to contamination by dangerous chemicals through early detection artificial intelligence (AI).
“We plan to develop the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), CNN, and blockchain technology in the food safety industry and build international collaboration,” he said.
This success cannot be separated from the guidance of the lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA UGM, Mokhammad Fajar Pradipta, as well as collaboration across departments ranging from Nutrition, Statistics, to Information Technology.
