Kevin Keegan has sadly passed away at the age of 75, sources close to the family have confirmed.
The former striker is a household name in British football, thanks to a stellar playing career that included spells at Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle.
He won 63 caps for England, scoring 21 goals and got a brief outing for his country at the 1982 World Cup.
Keegan – who won the Ballon D’Or twice in his time in Germany – later embarked on a career as a manager, leading Newcastle to the verge of a Premier League title in the 1995/96 season, before a sensational collapse handed Manchester United the Championship.
He also had a short spell in charge of the England national team at the turn of the century – coaching the Three Lions at Euro 2000 – Keegan returned to St James Park for a second spell as manager in 2008 after also managing Fulham and Manchester City.
Back in January, it was announced that the two-time Ballon D’Or winner had been diagnosed with stage four cancer and that he was set to undergo treatment.
And in a statement shared on behalf of the family by Sky Sports, the England hero’s sad passing has now been confirmed.
It read: “It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75. Kevin had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.
“A double Ballon D’or winner, Kevin was a much loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all their support.
“This is a hugely difficult time and they are requesting space and privacy.”
