The former Ibrox star is being targeted by Danny Rohl with the January window fast approaching
Rangers target Josh Windass has already admitted he “regretted” leaving the club and held talks over a return amid escalating interest from Ibrox.
Record Sport understands that Gers gaffer Danny Rohl is keen to be reunited with the former Ibrox star, who he managed at Sheffield Wednesday, but has seen a first loan bid booted out by the Welsh outfit. The Red Dragons are determined to cling on to the star.
He signed a deal until 2028 in the summer, and will resist any further loan offers from Glasgow. Rangers appear to be priced out of a permanent move for Englishman, with his wages understood to be a serious sticking point.
But it’s understood Windass would not be against holding talks with his former employers. He has previously admitted he was “stupid” to leave Glasgow for Wigan in 2018 when Steven Gerrard was in the dugout.
He told Open Goal in the summer: “I had a nightmare. I don’t want to go over it. They activated my buyout clause.
“He [Gerrard] came up to me and got me off the bus and told me, ‘These have put a bid in for you. I have obviously got to tell you because you’re not going to leave to go there…and then I left.
“I was about to start. It was Maribor in the Europa League. I didn’t have an agent or anything. It was a bad decision.
“But I just went straight down the motorway. Mick Beale (former Rangers assistant) was texting me, saying you’re making a mistake. I was 23, I wanted a bigger wage. I was stupid.”
The 31-year-old also revealed he had return talks with Gerrard shortly after joining the Latics: “We had a zoom call about six months later because I was going to go back on loan in the January, (Wigan boss) Paul Cook wouldn’t let me go.
“Gerrard basically gave me what for. He told me everything that was wrong with me and how I can improve and stuff as a person.
“He said if we are going to bring you back, we need to have an honest conversation. I never went back anyway, and that was it.
“It’s ages ago now, so I’m not that bothered by it now. But for two years after, I was thinking about it every day until I signed for Sheffield Wednesday.”
Rohl made Windass Wednesday captain during his time at Hillsborough, with the playmaker declaring the German is the best coach he was worked with.
Amid the transfer noise, Windass has taken to social media with a cryptic post. He shared an image to Instagram containing a quote that read: “People who don’t understand your silence will never understand your words.”
It remains to be seen if the player will push for a move – or if Wrexham will stick to their guns over a player who has netted six goals already this term in the Championship, and chipped in with three assists.
