Another store is set to be axed next year.
One of the UK’s leading stationery chains is set to make another closure in Scotland. It comes amidst a massive restructuring plan that has already shuttered several branches.
TG Jones began its journey after investment firm Modella Capital bought over WHSmith. The deal, which took place in July 2025, saw all 480 stores bought over and rebranded under the new ‘family’ name.
However, 150 of these are set to be axed following court-approved rescue plans announced in July. Since then, several across Scotland have disappeared, with one in St Andrews also now said to be on the list.
According to a disgruntled shopper on the Real St Andrews Facebook page, the branch, located on 90-92 South Street, will close down on January 9, 2027. The move means that the local area could also lose its only Post Office branch located inside the premises.
The news was also blasted by fellow dissatisfied locals in the area. One went on to call it “ludicrous” that St Andrews would be left without a Post Office branch, particularly in an area that also attracts many visitors and students.
A spokesperson for the Post Office has since confirmed to the Daily Record that its branch will “regrettably” close down, although the official date has not been confirmed, as this could differ to the closure date for the TG Jones store.
With the closure date for the Post Office yet to be finalised, the postal firm is in the process of seeking out alternative premises and is already said to have received expressions of interest from fellow retailers, although a replacement could take up to six months.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We fully recognise the challenging trading conditions that TG Jones and many other High Street retailers are facing at the moment. TG Jones had its Restructuring Plan approved by the High Court on 1 July.
“Consequently, TG Jones is to close its St Andrews store. Regrettably, St Andrews Post Office is due to close in early 2027. The date is being finalised. The vacancy has already been advertised, and we have heard from interested retailers.
“We are now looking more closely at the expressions of interest. We want to open a replacement branch as soon as possible, but this can take around six months. In the interim alternative branches will be in Ceres and Tayport.
It comes after the Daily Record reported that another Scottish branch would be closing on the same day next year. The stationery chain confirmed its Galashiels branch, located on 29-33 Channel Street, would also close on January 9, 2027.
At the time, a spokesperson confirmed that it was working “to secure the long-term future” of the brand, before thanking staff members “for their commitment and the contribution they have made to TG Jones.”
It’s just the latest TG Jones store to be earmarked for closure. The high street retailer’s Inverness branch officially launched a closing down sale a few weeks ago before permanently closing on October 6.
Another outlet in Ayr has also closed down this year. Meanwhile, the TG Jones in Stirling’s Thistles centre also pulled down its shutters, although the Post Office branch is now reopen to the public following a major refurbishment.
The Daily Record has also approached TG Jones for a further statement.
