A former NASA engineer has shared a simple four-step method to defrost your car windscreen in seconds – and it’s really beneficial for those cold winter mornings
Nobody enjoys waking up to a frozen windscreen, but it’s become an all-too-common occurrence, particularly during the winter months. While a blanket of snow might look picturesque, for motorists it spells one thing – extra hassle.
Drivers must clear their car’s windscreen before hitting the road, or they could face a substantial fine. Although it demands additional time in the morning, it also means enduring freezing hands whilst scraping away the ice. However, an automotive specialist from the West Midlands, posting as @eden_tyres_and_servicing on TikTok, has shared a handy trick to defrost your windscreen with ease. They disclosed in a video: “Here is the best way to defrost your windscreen according to a former NASA engineer.”
Their initial suggestion is to “turn on the car heater immediately at full blast”. Next, you should “turn on the car’s air conditioning, which will help soak up the remainder of any moisture inside” and assists in drying out the vehicle to stop windows from steaming up.
The third recommendation is to “turn off the car air circulation button” because leaving it on means “humidity is trapped inside”. The fourth tip might surprise you, as the professionals advised to “open all your car windows ever so slightly”.
Based on their instructions, this method allows the “exchange of humidity in the car for the dry air outside,” delivering a crystal-clear, ice-free windscreen.
In the comments section, one user proposed: “Also, put your sun visors down-it traps more of the hot air against the screen.”
Yet another commenter pointed out “this doesn’t work” for their vehicle, suggesting that effectiveness may differ depending on the car model.
Others shared alternative approaches, with one person suggesting: “Slight warm water in a bottle and boom 5 secs later. Being doing it for 27 years and no smashed window,” though this method isn’t advised as it raises the risk of shattering glass.
A different individual remarked: “A sealed plastic bag with water slightly above cold-not even tepid-rubs all over windows. Works every time.”
In a video clip, one TikToker voiced their annoyance: “My car doesn’t have these fancy buttons. I have to turn my car on and wait for the heating to heat up, which takes about 20-25 mins.”
Someone else offered another suggestion: “Ice scraper, proper Job, £1.99, takes 5 mins.”
