Experts have put eight common oven cleaning hacks to the test – and this one simple household item came out on top.
Oven cleaning can be a horrendous task, often requiring a lot of effort, and it can be difficult to find that perfect shine. Spills and crumbs get burned onto the oven’s interior and regrettably, conventional oven cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can be dangerous to breathe in.
For those stubborn “baked-on grease marks”, there is an everyday household item that is “simple” and “the most effective natural oven cleaner” – and it’s not white vinegar, reports the Express. Soapranos Cleaning Services’ experts have put eight different home remedies to the test, finding that a paste made from baking soda and water gives the “best results” when cleaning greasy ovens.
To use this trick, put together three tablespoons of water with two tablespoons of baking soda to make a consistent paste.
Spread this across the oven’s interior and let it sit for 20 minutes before easily wiping it away
The specialists said: “Baking soda and water is one of the easiest cleaning solutions you can make and actually has better results than the ones that rely on white vinegar as the primary cleaning ingredient.
“While white vinegar can be a good cleaning agent in other cases, its acid level isn’t quite potent enough to dissolve the tough grime that’s typical in most ovens.”
The remarkable cleaning ability of the baking soda solution lies in the natural strength of this everyday kitchen item.
The cleaning experts have said that that “baking soda is incredibly absorbent, which is why it works so well for absorbing unwanted odours in refrigerators.”
They further explained that “baking soda can absorb stubborn grease and help loosen the stuck-on burnt debris when used inside an oven.”
Despite the popular advice to use lemon juice for tackling grease in ovens, these professionals have a different opinion.
Their research indicates that “lemon juice struggles to make a significant impact” in battling the filth coating an oven’s interior.
They assert that while citric acid in lemon juice may be useful for cleansing surfaces like countertops and bathtubs, it just “does not have the power to break down the stuck-on grime” that plagues the inner surfaces of ovens.

Experts have also set out how often you should clean your oven.
You should wipe down the racks after every use, and it is recommended to carry out a deep-clean every three months.
Although if you use it more often, you may need to increase this to once a month.
Others have suggested you can clean your oven with orange peels.
